Cross Columns are used when you don't want to spend the extra money on long reach tooling on a Sq.

Cross Tooling Columns are designed so you don't need to spend extra money on extended reach tooling.  You do loose some column face, but you gain the ability to get closer to the part allowing 3 sided access, and with a Jergens Pallet mounted on the column it will allow 5 face machining with a 90 second index.
